International Marsilio Ficino Symposium

“Only those live truly and happily who live in truth itself, the fount of true happiness.” Marsilio Ficino

The International Ficino Symposium held in Malta in December 2012 offered its participants, in the master’s own words, “the art of discussion while they play”. It was held at the Jesuit Retreat House of Mount Saint Joseph in Mosta.

Arthur and Phyllis Farnedell, from the London School, led students from the Malta School and others from England, Cyprus, South Africa, Australia and America to a grand tour of Ficino’s works where Ficino could be encountered in his various roles of philosopher, scholar, musician and priest.

Our foreign guests had the opportunity of visiting Mdina, Hagar Qim and Mnajdra and Valletta where, together with practically all the members of the Malta School, they even enjoyed a concert at the Auberge de Castille. Elizabeth Green and Catherine Abela played Mozart, Bach and Haydn. Ficino held that “the harmony that men make with musical instruments is merely an image of divine harmony”.
